Student financial aid calculator 2026–2027 – study grant, housing supplement and income limit
Estimate the financial aid for students (opintotuki) you can get from Kela in the academic year 2026–2027: the study grant (opintoraha), the housing supplement for students (asumislisä) and the government guarantee for a student loan. You also see your annual income limit (vuositulorajat) and whether your income fits within it.
Financial aid for students consists of the study grant, a student loan and the housing supplement. A student aged 18 or over who lives independently gets a study grant of €279.38 a month. The government guarantee for a student loan is up to €850 a month for adults. The housing supplement is 80% of your acceptable housing costs, at most €296 (Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen), €248 (large cities) or €216 (other municipalities) a month. The annual income limit depends on your financial aid months: €1,118 for each month with aid and €3,355 for each month without.
How much is Kela student financial aid per month?
A typical higher education student aged 20 or over who rents in Tampere gets a study grant of €279.38 and a housing supplement of up to €248, together €527.38 a month. With 9 financial aid months (September to May) the annual income limit is €20,127. If you exceed it by more than €374, Kela recovers aid with a 7.5% increase unless you cancel months in time. Kela pays financial aid for students if you study full time in a course that gives you the right to it, make progress in your studies and need financial assistance. If you are not a Finnish citizen, check first whether you qualify: a student who moved to Finland only to study usually cannot get it.
- Living independently, 18 or over: €279.38 a month.
- Living with parents: €43.15 to 204.42 a month, depending on age and parents' income.
- Provider supplement (huoltajakorotus) for students with a child under 18: €141.63 a month.
80% of your share of the rent, up to the maximum acceptable housing costs of your municipality. A student with children applies for the general housing allowance (yleinen asumistuki) instead, so the housing supplement is €0 in this calculator.
All taxable earned and capital income counts, at its gross amount. Cancelling one month of financial aid raises the limit by €2,237. Cancel or pay back aid by the end of April of the following year to avoid recovery.
